History ofthe District:

Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division was notified as a full-fledged Civil Sub-Division vide the Government of Meghalaya’s Notification No. HPL.539/81/51, dated 22nd June, 1982. For public convenience and better administration, it was upgraded into a full-fledged District with headquarter at Mawkyrwat vide Government’s Notification dated 3rd August, 2012. The District is located at 25.3106° N, 91.2059° E.

The new District composed all the villages of two Community & Rural Development Blocks viz. Ranikor Community & Rural Development Block and Mawkyrwat Community & Rural Development Block, including 18 (Eighteen) Villages under Warsan Lyngdoh Gram Sevak Circle of Nongstoin in Community & Rural Development Block as listed in the Schedule-I to the Notification with the following boundaries:

  • North: West Khasi Hills District
  • South: Bangladesh
  • East: East Khasi Hills District
  • West: West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills District

Administrative Units:

The district is divided into two blocks:

  1. Mawkyrwat C&RD Block
  2. Ranikor C&RD Block

Separation of Judiciary from Executive:

The 31st August 2019 was a historic day for the District when the separation of Judiciary from the Executive was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, the then Hon’ble Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya.
